Farewell Olof and thanks for everything!!
It went against my better judgement to agree to go to the last home game of the season when my better half suggested it (especially since my last home game experience was losing to Wigan 0-2 and I swore that day, I'd never go again as we were so poor) - but as it was my last chance to see Olof appear at home in a Villa shirt, I thought it was a safe shout. David said we would win easily... What can I say? I think I must have taken a wrong turn and ended up watching a tribute side pretending to Villa play but I certainly didn't see the Villa that has been wowing everyone and getting rave reviews in the press and TV. I t was fairly shocking and I sort of want to block it out of my memory as it just felt like the last time I was there - only worse as we were sat right next to the Wigan fans. I mean RIGHT next to the Wigan fans! Perhaps it was the fact that Liverpool acted in a most unsporting way by announcing their clear interest in Barry just a day before the game and offering us a derisory deal for him that upset the team's preparation. Who knows, but the players did not seem to have European football in their minds today that is for sure! Which brings me to the gorgeous, Juve-bound Mr Mellberg. He has been such a great servant to Villa, a true pro, a proper player - not one of these that shows up, takes the wages and tips his hat; he plays football because he loves it and I love it that he chose to play a large chunk of his career at Villa. He still looks as gorgeous as the day he walked through our doors and the Italian ladies will LOVE him I'm sure. Just a little bit more gorgeous today was his wee son who brought a smile to the faces of everyone who had stopped behind to wish the team well. He had a little blue ball that he was kicking towards the Holte End and the crowd cheered each time he kicked it. When Olof threw the ball towards the tunnel, he just went and got it and tried to go back towards the Holte End. What a STAR!!! Made me forget about our horrible defeat. Anyway...no UEFA Cup for us me thinks. Let's hope we can hold on to our best players over the summer and buy a whole lot more - even if we don't have European football to tempt them! Final thought - I'd quite like Blackburn to beat Blues next week - even if it does mean they get the Intertoto place. I know that's probably not cool but it's how I feel at the moment, don't know why! Cheers everyone! Love Mersonmania xx
