Way Back When We Was Good

I need to go back a few days first, before I get onto the weekend.

Wednesday night, I came in from work and Newcastle were playing on the telly in th UEFA Cup. So I sat there watching it, and to be honest, enjoyed the game. But then, thoughts started running round my head.

"That should have been us." was the main message the voices were saying. "If it hadn't had been for those last two games last season. We should have beaten Southampton, which would have given us 2 more points, and we'd have been sixth, and it wouldn't have mattered about the Man U game. Then we would have been on a European adventure."

And I had to agree with them.

"Never mind," I said to the empty flat, "It's looking more and more likely that 7th place will get us a European spot this season, and when we beat the Blues on Sunday, everything will be fine....."

And it would have too. The way the games went on Saturday, a win would have put us two points behind Charlton, and a great boost to go on and overtake them for the seventh spot.

But then we kicked off.

To say it wasn't a good game is like trying to say that Saddam was a bit misunderstood. Both sides were awful. The 4-5-1 lineup that DOL is putting out at the moment just doesn't seem to work. We'd got the extra man in midfield, but every loose ball there was ended up with a Bloonose. With five in midfield, we should have bossed the game, but it seemed like we were playing with three at times.

In my eyes, the 4-4-2 was the way to start, with Moore and Vassell up front, and Berson losing out in the midfield. Then at half time, when we should have been 1-0 up (great free kick Nobby - should have really gone in!), swap the still injured Vass for the still injured Cole, leaving Luke on. You just can't haul off our only fit striker after an hour, when we're chasing the game, and bring on two unfit guys. It's just not going to happen for you, and so it proved.

However, once again, the Blues relied on our generousity to win the game. How the hell Heskey scored with that shot is still confusing me now. I just don't get how the ball managed to go under Sorenson's body like that. Except I should do, as he's done it before this season. Against the Blues. So they knew to hit the shots at his body, and sooner or later he's going to get on bounce off him and into the net.

The second goal was a joke. Basic rules apply in that situation. Whack the ball into row Z. It's the first thing that kids are taught - clear the bugger as far away from your goal as you can, then regroup. But no, we decide to hammer it straight at Julien Gray, who mustn't have believed his luck.

Absolute rubbish.

It's not even worth breaking it down to a player by player basis. No one stood out today in a positive light, although a few of them shone quite brightly in a bad way - for example, I can't wait for Delaney to be fit again so we can get a proper right back again. Actually, as an aside, he's been picked by Wales, so does this mean he'll be back soon?

It's times like this that I'm glad I'm in London, surrounded by Arsenal fans, than back in Brum with the knuckledraggers. Hope Mrs Mersonmania got on OK today at school!
